Pitbull

pitbull.jpg

Pitbull just sent his first broadcast today.

Born and raised in Miami, Pitbull’s MySpace tagline is “Too Latin for Hip Hop, Too Hip Hop for Latins…” He sings in Spanish and English and his latest album The Boatlift refers to the El Mariel Boatlift of 1980 which his dad was involved in. From this recent interview in HipHopDX

…my father was involved in bringing three boats over from Cuba. He brought 547 people to freedom in Miami. There were 125,000 refugees that came over from Cuba during the boat lift, which lasted from a six-to-eight-month period if I’m not mistaken. It’s a vital part of Hip Hop because the whole movie Scarface was based on the boat lift. Everybody knows Scarface because it’s a story about going from nothing to something, which we all come from in Hip Hop…

Veronica Ballestrini

Speaking of country stars who connect with their fans, Veronica Ballestrini is one of our favorites because she regularly sends updates and personal messages to her fans. She’s only 16 and already one of the top 20 country stars on MySpace. Here’s a message she sent earlier this week.

Billboard: Tips From Country Stars

bbbiz_logo.gif

Here’s a recent Billboard article with tips from country stars on ways to engage your fans. There’s even a little blurb on us.

Trisha Yearwood uses mobile/Web service SayNow to communicate with her fans, who can leave messages for her on a dedicated phone number and also receive replies. They can also listen to messages from other fans and Yearwood via a widget on her Web site. SayNow CEO Nikhyl Singhal says his service provides an “intimate connection between the celebrity and their fan base.” There is no cost to Yearwood or fans for the service since it sells advertising that runs at the end of the phone call. Experiment.

1000 True Fans

truefans.jpg

If you’re new on SayNow and you’re wondering how to make it if you don’t have millions of fans like Soulja Boy (or if you do have millions and you’re wondering why you should bother talking to your fans) you should read this great post that Kevin Kelly, the founding editor of Wired magazine, recently wrote.

The important question he addresses is: how do you differentiate yourself and most importantly how do you survive and keep doing what you love now that the means to distribute creative work are widely available to almost anyone?

One solution is to find 1,000 True Fans….

A creator, such as an artist, musician, photographer, craftsperson, performer, animator, designer, videomaker, or author - in other words, anyone producing works of art - needs to acquire only 1,000 True Fans to make a living.

A True Fan is defined as someone who will purchase anything and everything you produce. They will drive 200 miles to see you sing. They will buy the super deluxe re-issued hi-res box set of your stuff even though they have the low-res version. They have a Google Alert set for your name. They bookmark the eBay page where your out-of-print editions show up. They come to your openings. They have you sign their copies. They buy the t-shirt, and the mug, and the hat. They can’t wait till you issue your next work. They are true fans….

The key challenge is that you have to maintain direct contact with your 1,000 True Fans. They are giving you their support directly. Maybe they come to your house concerts, or they are buying your DVDs from your website, or they order your prints from Pictopia. As much as possible you retain the full amount of their support. You also benefit from the direct feedback and love. (emphasis mine)
